Upon learning the death of Wolfgang Schäuble, German Minister of Finance during the European Debt Crisis, Yannis Androulidakis, a Greek journalist posted the following comment on Facebook:
In 2010 I was 34 years old, I had returned to Greece, I had started working and I had just had children. In front of me, beyond the strategic goal of libertarian socialism, a life was opening up in which I could live from my work, travel a lot, be creative in my free time.
Instead, I spent my best years in a straitjacket of financial suffocation, going months unpaid, moving to smaller houses so I could pay for them and staying in them more than I would have liked, resulting in relationships developing there flawed from the very beginning; I didn’t make a tenth of the trips I dreamed of, I spent my creativity chasing after some pocket money to make it through the month, I was filled with the neuroses of hard living and I watched my friends suffer the same.
In less than a month I’ll be 48 and, as hard as it is to admit such things, my best years have already passed; and along with them my ability to do as much as I could has been completely destroyed – and this is true for my whole generation.
Schäuble, who died today, not only conceived, but also obsessively worked to bring about this situation.
I want to be clear that it is impossible for me to relativise: I have no tears to shed for him.”
This comment is very characteristic of what those years meant for Yannis’ generation. It is by far not the worse tragedy a Greek has suffered because of German – EU – IMF policies imposed on a small member country of the European Union, with a clearly sadistic person leading the whole process. As another Greek posted at the social media:
“There is no hell but he will forever be remembered as the man that drove so many Greeks to death and suicide and at least there is that. Schaeuble loved to forget that it was a financial scandal that hindered him from becoming German chancellor.”
The life of millions of Greeks was destroyed as a result of a sadistic application by Schäuble and Merkel of the harshest and economically more stupid programs conceived in the world history of Economics. (Not at all stupid of course if we consider them not a program of “bail out” of Greece, but of “bail out” of huge Banks).
“Nationalist” in a way, Schäuble has transformed, through the Greek program, the European Union into a colony of the big financial Capital, not necessarily European Financial Capital. He was able to bye the cooperation of the PASOK and ND leadership because Siemens was paying huge bribes to their leaders and cadres. He, the corrupted, was accusing of corruption Greeks whom Germans were bribing!
Finally he was able to crush the Greeks, but only with the help of the US and the betrayal of Tsipras and SYRIZA. But in the long run, by doing that, he destroyed much of the capacity (if any) of the EU to resist “markets” and become an independent entity and, also, the political capital of Germany. This is a result of a stupid, greedy and provincial kind of “nationalism” which has nothing forgotten and nothing learned from German history. Berlin will discover the consequences of loosing its political capital during the next EU crisis. As for Greece, it remains a destroyed country, in much worse shape than when the “bail – out programs” were imposed upon it.
We hope to be able to return soon to a more extended presentation of the extremely negative contribution of Schäuble and Merkel to the European project, to European democracy and independence.
