“What happened was a political assassination. Iraq cannot accept this.”
byJanuary 05, 2020
Iraq’s parliament voted in an extraordinary session Sunday to expel all American troops from the country and file a United Nations complaint against the U.S. for violating Iraq’s sovereignty with its assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad.
Ahead of the vote, chants of “No, no, America” rang out inside the hall.
“Iraq called on the U.N. Security Council to condemn the bombing and assassinations,” Iraq’s foreign ministry said in a statement following the vote.
As The National reported, the Iraqi parliament approved “a five-point action plan that would require the Iraqi government to end the presence of foreign troops in the country, and withdraw its request for assistance from the anti-ISIS global coalition.”
“Parliament also called on the government to ban the use of Iraqi airspace by any foreign power,” according to The National. The resolution still requires the approval of the Iraqi government.
The U.S. currently has around 5,000 troops stationed in Iraq.

‘You’re Not a Dictator’: US House Committee Slams Trump, Seeks to Curb Iran Warmongering

06.01.2020
Tensions between the United States and Iran have risen sharply, with a further escalation after attacks on US military bases in Iraq by Iranian-backed militias, the storming of the US embassy in Iraq and the assassination of Iran’s top military commander Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad by a US airstrike.
US President Donald Trump used his public Twitter account to ‘notify’ Congress that Washington would strike Tehran, in what the president described as a potentially “disproportionate” manner, should Iran attack any US citizen or target any US assets, military or otherwise, as an act of revenge for killing Soleimani.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee lashed out at Trump, slamming his language and reminding the US president that only the US Congress has the authority to authorize acts of war.

Trump Says US Will Not Leave Iraq Until Baghdad Pays for American Air Base, Threatens Sanctions

The Iraqi parliament on Sunday voted to expel all foreign troops from the nation’s territories and cut off ties with the US-led international anti-terrorist coalition after Friday’s assassination of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the elite Quds Force of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Baghdad, by the US.
US President Donald Trump was referring to the Balad military base that houses US forces some 50 miles north of Baghdad.
“We have a very extraordinarily expensive airbase that’s there. It cost billions of dollars to build. Long before my time We’re not leaving unless they pay us back for it […] We will charge them sanctions like they’ve never seen before ever. It’ll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame”, Trump said Sunday, while traveling back to DC from Florida.
Earlier in the day, Iraq’s parliament voiced its support to a recommendation put forward by Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi to order the withdrawal of US-led coalition troops from the country and ending cooperation with the international coalition.
